Education & Community Sub Council
Another massive Thank you! To everyone who came and to those who could not make it, we hope to see you next time!
Theres are not the extensive notes, Drew puts those together, so massive thank you to him!
Just a few headlines
-
38/40 students voted for a union belief to turn into policy, this union belief/policy is to campaign on local safety in and around campuses, including how timetabling can be adjusted to ensure students are returning home at safe times. There will be alot of stratds to this including reaching out to MP's, County councillors & more!if you want to be a part of shaping this policy let me know!
-
I'm running a campaign around accommodation and part of that is a charter, sub council decided that within the charter some themes are: Consider accommodation costs as a percentage of the minimum student loan, review requirements for registered landlords, review maintenance standards for properties, require participating local landlords to agree to the Accommodation Charter & ensure properties meet required building regulations and standards. This still needs fleshing out so I've created a team's group chat for students who are interested in the creation of an accommodation charter to join. So please let me know if you want to be a part of shaping the accommodation charter.
- Sub council agreed that a central hub of creatives was a good idea. If you’d like to be involved in the conversation let me know.
- ACE: I'm looking into lack of Adobe license considering other in other schools, some subjects do. Compulsory field trips on compulsory modules. Students reasonable adjustments are being ignored, alternative assessments are not ready.
- EHS: Due to hot desking, there is a lack of pastoral support. Timetabling at City campus. Timetabling issues generally. Staffing shortages. Online rather than in person learning. Ai assignments with no alternatives
- BCSS: Nothing much that is not covered in city campus issues.
I'm really big on co-creation so I don't just want to make something then bring it to you guys, I want your input on every stage, so if you do want to get involved in the above please let me know🙂

Student Opportunities Updates
Discuss with the deans!
This is a chance to talk about anything you think the heads of schools should know! It's a constructive session where we actually come up with solutions!
Topics I'd recommend
- Disability access on course, lack of alternative assessments
- A united stance on Ai from the schools
- Equal opportunities of resources (Adobe)
- Why aren't ACLS managers of other staff?
- Students in BUCS & Wednesday lectures
- Resources like Adobe being part of course fee
- Merging courses
- Courses moving from FCH -> Park

Every event that goes on, we want student performers! If you would like to preform at any course vent, UoG event or UOGSU event please fill in the link!
Creating - make the FCH space yours.
There is an entrace way into FCH - Francs - We would like to transform one of these walls into an exhibition wall showcasing student work from across the university. Fill in the form to be included in the conversation.
Social media Take over
Tracy at Gloucester National Docks Is creating a Docks Activity Hub, it has a Instagram, TikTok & facebook....with 1 post so far....she would love to get in contact with any students ff that might be interested in doing a monthly takeover? So different sets of students could create and post (moderated by C&RT) for a month, and then another group take over - so the commitment level isn't too high, especially if there are 3 or 4 of teams working on the accounts and it could be good experience/exposure/volunteer hours for you!
Email her to get involved! Tracy : tracy.yates@canalrivertrust.org.uk

Campaigns to join Students, SU & National
- Animals & Fireworks
- There is a student looking at tackling fireworks in the local area especially with their impact on local wildlife and pets, if that's of interest I can put you in contact with him!
- Anti Ai
- At the Su we are running a campaign about AI and multiple strands are within it. If you are interested, please let me know!
- We are not Buying it
- Although the date has passed for the first demonstration they are still doing more work around getting a cap on essentials! I believe they are more active on Insta/TikTok, but here is the website https://www.werenotbuyingit.co.uk/
- NUS Free Bus travel for Students
- The NUS is doing some work on free transport as Parliament's Transport Committee has recommended free bus travel for under-22s. They want the government to go further and make bus travel for all students in further and higher education. https://www.nus.org.uk/free-buses
- NUS Student Loans
- The Nus is calling a petition on the Chancellor to: Reverse the freeze on student loan repayment thresholds Reform interest rates so balances do not grow faster than repayments, Introduce clearer, fairer terms that don't penalise lower and middle earners https://www.nus.org.uk/dont-freeze-our-futures

Local policy
Gloucestershire is working on a Spatial Development Strategy (SDS), a long-term plan that will set out how Gloucestershire should develop over a thirty-year period.
I think important y'all have a say, and so does the county council, so they are coming to campus on the dates below:
Please do book on using the link, it means we know how many people are coming so they can bring the right number of resources...and snacks...
This is a consultation, so you will get points towards accreditation!
Some of the topics will be: Climate, Economic Development, Environment, Geography &Population, Health & Wellbeing, Infrastructure, Transport & travel.
What do you think about volunteering?
Guy Dobson at the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council wants to explore how young people find volunteering in Gloucestershire. So, if you want to take part in a focus group, please email him! guyd@grcc.org.uk

Things happening at UoG
-
FCH - It has been put up for sale, no enquires as of last week (that I know of) Its being sold in "blocks" my worry is what is the plan if a block is sold and where are those subjects moving & how are students being kept in the loop.
-
Turnitin - No updates as of yet.
-
Working with WECA - Meeting next week to discuss working more closely with Uni of Bristol, UWE and Bath.
-
Catering - Freya and UoG held a consolation about catering and what students want on campus 2 weeks ago so we will see more form that soon.
-
Graduation - Confirmation of a summer graduation!
-
TEF & NSS - As I may have previously mentioned, the uni has not had the best NSS scores last year (UoG was excellent is some places, not so in other) Every Monday I have a meeting with the VC, heads of schools, HR & expertisnin the NSS 7 Communications where we discuss interventions. Right now, I am fighting the fight that real change needs to happen, not just "Throw a pizza party to make students happy" This is why it's so important you say something when issues come up.

Course Rep Accreditation - Last chance 10th Nov
-----------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for reading all the way through! This email takes approx. 3-4hrs to put together due to sheer volume of information so I really appreciate it!
Have a great weekend!
